Do I need van insurance?
You must have at least third-party liability cover to meet your legal requirements to drive on the road. A standard van insurance policy will cover strictly personal use only (social, domestic and pleasure), so if you use your van for any kind of business use, including commuting, it’s important to get the right type of van insurance.
What type of van insurance do I need?
Company van insurance
If your van is registered in the name of your limited company, and used purely for business purposes, you’ll need to get a quote for company van insurance. This means your van insurance will be in the company’s name, too.
Business owners often need their employees to drive their vans as they go about their jobs. For this you’ll need a policy that covers either “any driver”, or more restricting but cheaper, “named drivers”.
Business van insurance
If you use your van to carry tools, materials, or goods relating to your work, you need business van insurance (also known as commercial van insurance) which provides you with carriage of own goods cover.
Business van insurance is also essential if you commute to work in your van, even if you only use it for personal or social driving the rest of the time.
Standard / private van insurance
If you drive a van for purely social, domestic and pleasure use, and not for commuting, private van insurance will probably give you enough cover.
We’ve written in more detail about the different types of van insurance in our article: Business Van Insurance vs Private Van Insurance.
Carriage of Own Goods vs Hire and Reward
There are different types of commercial van insurance, too: Carriage of Own Goods or Carriage of Goods for Hire and Reward.
Carriage of own goods
A company van insurance policy for carriage of own goods is ideal if you pick up stock from a wholesaler, or deliver your own company’s goods to a customer. It will also cover equipment in the van that’s related to your trade, for example building or plumbing tools.
Carriage of Goods for Hire and Reward
Own Goods insurance won’t cover you for delivering other people’s goods to their customers – for that, you’ll need courier van insurance, which provides you with carriage of goods for hire and reward.
Is business van insurance more expensive?
Usually, yes. Of course, lots of difference factors are taken into account when setting premiums, but the following is true of most vans that are used for business:
- They have more powerful engines than non-business vehicles, and they tend to spend more time on the road, both of which increase the risk of an accident
- They have greater storage capacity, so the value of goods being carried is higher, which makes claims more expensive.
Does business van insurance cover personal use?
Usually, yes. If you drive a company van that is used for both commercial and personal use, most business van policies will cover both.
Tips that might lower your insurance costs
- Look to buy a van in a lower insurance group
- Install security features such as an alarm or vehicle tracker
- Park your van off-road, in a secure area, or in a garage
- Increase your voluntary excess (but keep in mind this means you’ll have to pay a larger share of any expenses if you make a claim).
