What is an IN10 conviction?
It’s against the law to drive a vehicle on a public road, or even keep it parked on the road, without at least the most basic level of car insurance (third party insurance). An IN10 conviction is the penalty for driving without insurance. As well as points on your licence and a fine imposed by the court, an IN10 conviction also means you’re likely to face more expensive car insurance.
That’s where Complete Cover Group comes in.
How can Complete Cover Group help drivers with an IN10 conviction?
If you have a conviction for driving without insurance, don’t despair. You can get affordable car insurance even with previous motoring convictions at Complete Cover Group.
Our specialist brokers will work with a range of well-known insurance suppliers such Axa, Aviva and Zurich, to find you an affordable insurance premium.
We understand that not all drivers with an IN10 conviction deliberately set out to drive without insurance. A variety of situations can arise that results in an insurance policy accidentally being invalidated or not being renewed on time, leaving you uninsured.
- Buying the wrong type of policy
- Not giving the insurer important information about yourself or your car
- Unintentionally forgetting to renew a policy in time
- Undeclared car modifications – you might not realise you need to make an insurer aware of a particular alteration. Perhaps you were unaware of changes made by a previous owner.
- Mistakenly believing that your own insurance covers you to drive other vehicles
Why did the police stop me for not having insurance?
The police use number plate recognition cameras linked to a central database of insured vehicles to identify drivers who, they believe, don’t have valid car insurance. You’ll be given seven days to provide evidence that you were insured at the time you were stopped.
As we showed above, there could be a number of reasons why you accidentally became uninsured. You should check your policy carefully for errors, and make sure you haven’t missed some correspondence from your insurance company telling you that they have cancelled the policy.
What’s the penalty for driving without insurance?
Driving without insurance can lead to some serious consequences. As a minimum you’ll be given a fine and at least six points on your licence. If your case is handled in court the fine can be unlimited and you could even be disqualified from driving for more serious offences.
The police also have the power to seize the vehicle you were driving when they stopped you, impound it or even destroy it in some situations. Impounded cars will only be returned once you can provide evidence that you’ve bought the right insurance.
It’s likely you’ll be faced with an increase in your car insurance, too. Some insurance providers may not even cover you at all.
How long does an IN10 stay on your licence?
An IN10 endorsement will stay on your licence for four years starting from the date of the offence.
Will you have a criminal record?
No; driving without insurance is not an imprisonable offence, so an IN10 conviction does not appear on a criminal record. However, as with any conviction, must disclose it when applying for car insurance.
Does comprehensive insurance cover you to drive other vehicles?
This is a common misconception. It’s true that some comprehensive policies cover you to drive other vehicles, but not all do. Don’t assume you are covered, as this can lead to you driving uninsured. Check your policy wording carefully for details of restrictions.
