What’s the difference between SP30 and SP50 speeding convictions?
SP30 – Exceeding Statutory Speed Limit on Public Road
One of the most common speeding offences is exceeding the limit on a public road (not a motorway). There are many speed cameras and traffic police in place to catch offenders and reduce the prevalence of this.
SP50 – Exceeding Speed Limit on a Motorway
This offence relates solely to exceeding the speed limit on a motorway. This is a different offence because the speed allowed on a motorway is higher; to be convicted, a driver would have to have been exceeding 70mph.
What are the penalties for speeding?
You will receive a minimum fine of £100.
You will get between 3 to 6 points on your licence depending on the type of offence. You may be given the option of taking a speed awareness course instead of receiving points. This can happen if it’s your first speeding offence or you haven’t attended a course within the last three years.
Code | Offence | Penalty points |
SP10 | Exceeding goods vehicle speed limits | 3 to 6 |
SP20 | Exceeding the speed limit for type of vehicle (excluding goods or passenger vehicles) | 3 to 6 |
SP30 | Exceeding the statutory speed limit on a public road | 3 to 6 |
SP40 | Exceeding the passenger vehicle speed limit | 3 to 6 |
SP50 | Exceeding the speed limit on a motorway | 3 to 6 |
SP60 | Undefined speed limit offence | 3 to 6 |
If the points you receive result in getting 12 or more points within 3 years, you may receive a TT99 disqualification under the ‘totting-up’ procedure. Note that if you are a new driver and have passed your test within the last 2 years and you get 6 or more points, your licence may be revoked.
Your insurance premiums will most likely be more expensive than they were before, especially if you are a young driver. No matter your situation, Complete Cover can help you find an affordable quote.
How long does a speeding conviction last?
Speeding endorsements will stay on your licence for 4 years from the date of the offence.
Do speed awareness courses affect insurance
Neither the police, course provider or the DVLA will inform your insurance company of your attendance.
Going to an awareness course isn’t classed as a conviction so it doesn’t have to be declared like a speeding endorsement does. However, if your insurer asks you whether you’ve attended a speed awareness course you should tell them otherwise your policy may not be valid. Some companies may increase your premium but this could be less than having points on your licence.
